Learning How to Sail Isn’t Only for Calm Waters

Jummah Mubarak, sis! Just because you’re doing the right thing, doesn’t mean calamity won’t strike. Yes, you eat halal, pray on time, and fast on Mondays and Thursdays, just like those who came before us. In fact, many of the most devout faced trials we can hardly imagine. This is a chance to ponder the deeper questions—like WHY or what it all means. When you start exploring those questions, you begin to discover your true purpose. Don't get distracted by the fleeting illusions of this world; remember that Paradise is the ultimate goal. Think about it: did a pilot earn their license expecting smooth skies, or did a sailor set out thinking there would be no storms? Challenges have always been part of the journey, and they will continue to be. My grandpa used to tell me, it’s not the action, it’s the reaction…. So, even in turbulent times, know that there is wisdom to be gained from Allah swt and from life's experiences.

Surah Sad | 38:17

Be patient ˹O Prophet˺ with what they say. And remember Our servant, David, the man of strength. Indeed, he ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺.

David (as) was a Prophet renowned for his wisdom for many reasons. Not only did he possess power, but his diverse life experiences also contributed to his insight. The surrounding ayahs indicate that Allah swt bestowed wisdom upon David (as), and when we examine the stories of David (as) and other prophets, we see that wisdom can arise from many sources. One key lesson we can take from these narratives is the importance of gratitude. We shouldn’t dwell on the past; instead, we should recognize the spiritual lessons embedded in our experiences.

When we look at Luqman (as), sometimes referred to “Luqman the Wise”, he gave his son valuable advice and wisdom for life. He teaches him about the significance of faith, the importance of prayer, and the need for humility and patience. His teachings encourage his son to be aware of Allah and to be respectful and kind to others. Luqman even emphasized the details of his son’s demeanor and actions (being mindful of how he walked, his facial expressions, etc.), illustrating how gratitude can be expressed in everyday life. His story underscores the profound impact one person can have on their community through their guidance and example.

Profound Lessons of Sailing

1. Navigating Change:

  • Just as sailors must adjust their sails to changing winds, we too must adapt to life’s unpredictable circumstances. Flexibility and resilience are crucial in overcoming challenges.

2. Patience:

  • Sailing teaches the importance of patience. Sometimes, you must wait for the right wind or tide, reminding us that not everything can be rushed; some things require time and the right conditions.

3. Preparation and Planning:

  • Successful sailing requires careful planning, from checking the weather to ensuring all equipment is in order. Similarly, being prepared for life’s challenges can help us navigate difficulties more effectively.

4. Teamwork:

  • Sailing often requires a crew working together harmoniously. This illustrates the importance of collaboration and communication in achieving shared goals in our personal and professional lives.

5. Facing Fears:

  • Sailing can be daunting, especially in rough waters. Learning to confront our fears, whether they relate to uncertainty or failure, is essential for growth.

6. Embracing the Journey:

  • The journey is just as important as the destination in sailing. This teaches us to appreciate the experiences we encounter along the way, not just the end goals we strive for.

7. Staying Calm in Storms:

  • Just as sailors must remain calm during storms to navigate safely, we too should cultivate composure and clarity in times of crisis.

8. Learning from Mistakes:

  • Every sailor has faced mishaps, and each one is a learning opportunity. Embracing our mistakes and learning from them is vital for personal growth.

9. Balance:

  • A well-sailed boat maintains balance to function efficiently. In life, finding balance between work, relationships, and self-care is crucial for overall well-being.

10. Embracing the Unknown:

  • Every voyage holds uncertainty, teaching us to be open to new experiences and possibilities. Life, like sailing, often involves venturing into the unknown.
