Soulmates in Islam

Jummah Mubarak sis! Being in the thick of wedding season can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Do we believe in soulmates in Islam? Well, the Prophet (saw) said souls are like conscripted soldiers and they incline towards one another based on a natural affinity (Musnad Abi Ya’la). Think about how your name was written next to someone else’s before Allah swt introduced the heavens and the earth. How amazing is it, that Allah swt thought of that person who you will naturally be inclined towards....

Surah Ar Rum 30:21 (The Romans)

“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.”

When you meet someone and realize they are the one, what do you? How do you know if they‘re really The One ? It can seem like an organic spark, or something playful, and then all of sudden serious! The reality is, it can only be experienced. Love is not blameworthy in Islam, nor is it forbidden because every heart is with Allah swt. Keep in mind, love itself is a test...think about why getting married is half of your deen (whew!).

Love is not fully in your control either, especially when it comes to part of falling in love. It's something that Allah swt decrees in your heart. As long as we don't transgress the boundaries and pursue it in a wholesome and halal way, then we can enjoy the blessing of this decree within the sanctity of marriage. As much as love may be based on our desires, it's truly based on our destiny. Our love story was written by Allah swt in the heavens before we even came to this world.

Keep in mind that romance is just like rizq, it's not something everyone is going to have in this world. Should that be the case, we should be content with what Allah swt has decreed, even if that means waiting for our spouse in Jannah. Remember the Prophet (as) said no one will be single in Jannah...

So if it’s decreed for us to have love in this world, is there a way that our bodies just know? Is this the love at first sight thing? Or is it some type of pheromone? Is there some magnetic interaction occurring and we just don’t know?

Of course there’s chemical reactions when falling in love, but what does your senses do when it happens? A leading Neuroscientist explains that “as people fall deeper into love, the brain floods again — this time with oxytocin, released when people are physically affectionate, and vasopressin, which generates the desire to protect one’s partner — creating feelings of attachment.”

Compared to other animals, humans are not typically known for their keen sense of smell. However, when it comes to falling in love, research shows that people do, in fact, rely on their noses to perceive chemical signals in a potential mate.
