Surah Al-Anfal 8:43 (The Spoils of War)
رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
“When Allah showed them to you in your dream as few; and if He had shown them to you as many, you [believers] would have lost courage and would have disputed in the matter [of whether to fight], but Allah saved [you from that]. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.”
Let’s say your gearing up for an important test, and you’re not sure how difficult the test will be despite hours of studying. Or you’re headed to unfamiliar territory and you have some sort of anxiety about where it is that you’re going or what’s next. No, we’re not talking fortune-telling sis, we’re talking about Allah swt speaking to your unconscious mind. (Oh, and never mind Shaytan and his games… don’t care or repeat any bad dream you had… the hater is just doing his job…)
Put yourself in the shoes of the Prophet (saw). You’re going to war and you don’t know the strength of your enemy. When the Prophet (saw) was leaving Madina along with other Muslims on his way to Badr for the encounter with the Quraysh, he did not have any definite information about the strength of the enemy. Allah swt showed him in a dream a vision of the enemy. On the basis of that vision, the Prophet (saw) estimated that the enemy was not too powerful. Later when the Prophet (saw) narrated his dream to the Muslims who will be fighting with him, they; were also encouraged and boldly went ahead to confront the enemy.
Now, don’t get too hasty when you get a good dream! Practice self-restraint. The Prophet (saw) told them to refrain from haste, panic, consternation, creed and uncalled-for enthusiasm. So be cool-headed and take well-considered decisions even in the face of crave dangers. This is key… sometimes we can get excited and may act rashly under provocation; (I know I’m guilty of it), but it’s better to desist from taking hasty action out of impatience. These lessons are beautiful in that we gain wisdom from this Qur'anic directive of patience. Allah extends all help and support to those who exercise 'patience' (sabr) in the above sense.
Dreams in Islam
Check out this free (yes, free.99) book on dreams on Islam. The author was inspired to write this book in honor of their teacher who transitioned. They acknowledged the authentic epistemology acquired from their great teacher prior to their passing. The subject of dreams in Islam has become an importance as the world continues to change and historical events draw closer. The Prophet (saw) said “The (good) dreams of a faithful believer is a part of the forty-six parts of prophetism” - Narrated by ‘Ubada bin As-Samit.
